The second opportunity of Google Glass

The second opportunity of Google Glass

The multinational announces the sale of its new generation of smart glasses by the hand of official partners such as the Spanish Streye

It seemed that Google had abandoned the project of its smart glasses after its Glass Explorer project ended in 2015 . However, this Tuesday the company has revealed that it has been working on its new Glass Enterprise since then, with the help of partners who have developed software, hardware and who will market these lenses.

One of these partners is the Spanish company Streye , the only one in our country and one of only two in Europe. The company based in Murcia has been working on the development of the device software since late 2015 when Google invited them to be official developers of their smart glasses .

Frank Escandell, director of business development for Streye, says that the three main improvements of the new Glass Enterprise are the increase in autonomy by a battery of 780 mAh, the Intel processor adapted to 'smartglass' and to do 'streaming', and the facility to fold them and put them in a case like that of conventional lenses.

Real applications
In addition, Escandell reveals that since February 2016 they have been marketing this second generation of glasses in an "unofficial" way among clients of the likes of Mapfre, Carrefour, Iberia, HP or Sabadell. Among the projects underway, the process of appraisal before the vehicle repair in Mapfre stand out. In this case, an operator has the glasses to make the photographic report of the car and synchronizes that information with the company's system.

It also has medical applications . This is the case of the Erasmus MC University Medical Center in Rotterdam. A surgeon who practices as a professor wears the Glass Enterprise and retransmits in real time and without latency the surgical operation. At the same time, students use the glasses with the Streye Chekr application to follow the instructions on task lists.

Main characteristics
The Spanish company has developed a comprehensive suite of solutions that consists of live video and audio transmission, live multimedia support, intelligent management of protocols and work processes and geolocation of geolocated alerts in real time.

Likewise, it deploys a bar code reader, QR and OCR system specially focused on logistics tasks. They have also designed their own internet platform "with a high level of security".

Regarding the hardware, improvement of the bluetooth and the WiFi signal, it incorporates a barometer, a high-end Intel processor, a larger diameter lens and a LED light that indicates when it is being recorded and thus protecting the privacy of those around it.

Availability and price
The new Glass Enterprise can be purchased by any individual or company from this Tuesday through official partners, since Google will not sell the glasses. The first software version has a price of 1,550 euros and the model with advanced software, 2,500 euros.

From Streye explain that the use of the license is "for life" and the first year users have updates and free support. From that moment on, it will have a price of 95 euros per year.

Its sales forecasts are 1,000 units until the end of this year , and 2,000 to 3,000 glasses in 2018. The pieces are manufactured in China and the assembly takes place in Silicon Valley, California.
